Tryptone
Tryptone is a specially formulated enzymatic digest of casein by the protease trypsin.
It provides a source of amino acids for the growing bacteria. Tryptone is similar to casamino acids, both being digests of casein
It is equivalent to Casein Enzyme Hydrolysate.
Application:
It is used to supply higher growth rates when used in molecular biology media preparations such as YPD Broth and Agar.
Used as a nitrogen source in culture media for fastidious and non-fastidious organisms.
Also used to deferentially select bacteria based on carbohydrate intake since Tryptone is carbohydrate deficient.
Tryptone is commonly used in microbiology to produce lysogeny broth (LB) for the growth of
E. coli and other microorganisms.
[2]
It is used in the production of Sterility Testing Media such as Tryptone Soya Agar and broth.
Tryptone is also a component of some germination media used in plant propagation.
